I never found being away from home for the holidays particularly difficult until this year. The past year however, has changed me in many ways, and most profoundly in the weight of my "anchor" You could say that I was always a bit transient in nature (thanks Dad) and I never minded missing a family gathering here or there. But this year, I felt as far away from home as I ever have because there was no where else I wanted to be more. I am so grateful for my family and loved ones, not only during the holidays, but every single day. They put up with receiving messages at all hours of the day and night due to time differences, crappy facetime connections and my sometimes insane breakdowns and subsequent rants that make little to no sense and usually end in crying. They deserve all of my thanks in the world.
This year, as I tried to suppress my overall melancholy around not being home for thanksgiving, I was treated to a wonderful evening with friends who made me feel a little closer to home. My program organized a dinner at Borla, who accommodated us with a belgian version of a turkey dinner (to be honest is was absolutely delicious) and a beautiful atmosphere. We dressed up, drank wine, ate until we were too full and enjoyed great company. I am so thankful to my classmates who took their time to celebrate this day that does not exist in many of their cultures and to share with me a memorable evening and my first "friendsgiving"!
